Foster mum named mother of year

29 April 2016

Families SA foster mum Laura Waldluter recently won the title of South Australian Barnardos Mother of the Year.

Laura was nominated by her friend, Natalie Sweet, who says she’s known Laura for many years and has always admired her dedication to her children.

“Laura has dedicated many hours to our local child care committee. This is on top of working 3 days a week organising disability respite care and working in the field at times,” Natalie says.

Already a busy mum of 3 toddlers, Laura wanted to fill the house with more children.

Last year, she became an emergency foster carer for 4 children and more recently she has taken on the permanent care of 3 siblings who otherwise may not have been able to stay together.

Families SA Social Worker, Leah Wright said the children she has in foster care are thriving and learning things that would have not have been possible without the support of Laura and her family.

“All of the children have special needs, but Laura always finds the time to take them to appointments, often travelling long distances to give them the specialist support they need,” Leah said.

Barnardos Mother of the Year awards recognise the enormous contribution that mums make in shaping Australia’s future through its role in nurturing children to help them realise their full potential.

South Australian finalist Laura will now attend the national awards held in Sydney just prior to Mother’s Day.
