Progress on Aboriginal Education

The inaugural meeting of the Department for Education’s Expert Advisory Panel for the Aboriginal Education Strategy was held today.

The panel comprises noted academics and educational representatives. It was formed to provide the department with information and advice to support the successful implementation of the department’s Aboriginal Education Strategy 2019-2029.

Panel members are:

  • Professor Peter Buckskin PSM FACE (Chairperson), Dean: Aboriginal Engagement and Strategic Projects, University of South Australia and Chair of the South Australian Aboriginal Education and Training Consultative Council
  • Professor Daryle Rigney, Professor, Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research, University of Technology Sydney
  • Dr Kaye Price AM, author, curriculum adviser
  • Ms Karen Glover, Senior Research Fellow – Aboriginal Health, South Australian Health and Medical Research Council (SAHMRI) and Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI)
  • Dr Karen Sinclair, Program Director: Aboriginal Studies, School of Creative Industries, University of South Australia
  • Commissioner April Lawrie, Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People
  • Annette Williams, Principal, Roxby Downs School (Education representative)
  • Joanne Smith, Director, Port Lincoln Children’s Centre (Education representative)
  • Rueben Burton, Director, Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Education Committee (Education representative)

At the meeting the department shared with panel members the projected milestones for the implementation of the strategy and had an initial conversation on baseline data and indicators.

This initial meeting provided the opportunity for panel members to discuss and provide advice to the department about:

  • the School Improvement Model and its alignment with the Aboriginal Education Strategy
  • English as an additional language or dialect (EALD) Hub

Professor Buckskin said a significant milestone has been achieved with our first meeting committing us to excellence, transparency and engagement in the implementation of the Aboriginal Education Strategy.

“The constructive discussion of the School Improvement Model and its alignment with the Aboriginal Education Strategy and collection of baseline data indicators set a positive direction for the work ahead” he said. 

The panel will meet 3 times per year with the next meeting planned for August then a third in late 2019.
