Year 7 to 10 students will be encouraged to gain greater exposure to industry, business and real world work opportunities through the new ‘World of Work Challenge’ for school students.
Under the new initiative, junior secondary school students will be incentivised to undertake 100 hours of participation in industry and employer activities.
The program will support students to develop the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about their career goals and future learning options.
The types of activities that can contribute to students achieving their 100 hours include work experience, industry visits, career conversations, vocational work placements and more.
Through the program, students will develop an ePortfolio and receive a certificate once they’ve reached 100 hours of activities.
Projects such as Heathfield High School’s ‘Industry Quest’, which is run in partnership with Jurlique, are showcasing innovative practice in engaging students in the world of work in interesting and exciting ways.
As part of the Quest, students learn about the company and undertake projects to design their own products. Project teams work together using STEM-based learning to formulate products, while also focusing on their entrepreneurial skills to design and develop packaging, marketing plans, costings and timelines to deliver their product to market.
The Government is calling on businesses and industry bodies across South Australia to get involved and propose ideas for engaging students in the World of Work Challenge, which is expected to begin in Semester 2 next year.
The announcement of the challenge comes after the Government has released its comprehensive VET for School Students policy, delivering the biggest overhaul of Vocational Education and Training (VET) in schools in a generation.
