Academic partners

The department has procured the services of expert partners at the University of South Australia to co-deliver the Languages Professional Learning Program.

Associate Professor Angela Scarino's team includes:

Associate Professor Angela Scarino

Angela Scarino is an Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics and Director of the Research Centre for Languages and Cultures at the University of South Australia. Her research expertise is in languages education in linguistically and culturally diverse societies, bi-and multilingualism, second language learning, learning-oriented assessment, intercultural language learning and second language teacher education. She is currently the Chair of the Multicultural Education and Languages Committee, a committee that advises the Minister for Education on languages and multicultural education in South Australia.

Dr Michelle Kohler

Michelle Kohler is an experienced language teacher and researcher in applied linguistics, who focuses on intercultural perspectives on language teaching and learning, particularly classroom practice, pedagogy and mediation, curriculum, program and assessment design, and language policy and planning. Michelle has contributed to various research, policy and professional learning projects in languages education including the Australian Curriculum: Languages (Indonesian). She is President Elect of the Applied Linguistics Association of Australia and Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the Research Centre for Languages and Cultures, University of South Australia.

Associate Professor Kathleen Heugh's team includes:

Associate Professor Kathleen Heugh

Associate Professor Kathleen Heugh is an educational linguist whose research and teaching focuses on bilingual and multilingual education policies and practices. She has advised 35 national governments in Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe on language education policy, its implementation and teacher education. She led the first national sociolinguistic survey of South Africa and the first system-wide multilingual assessment of school students in the world. She has co-ordinated post-graduate in-service education programs for teachers who work with multilingual students and a post-graduate program for teacher educators and education officials from 15 countries in bilingual and multilingual education. She has also undertaken several system-wide and multi-country language education policy evaluations and research for governments and development agencies, including UNESCO. Much of her recent fieldwork is in remote and post-conflict communities in sub-Saharan Africa. Currently she uses multilingual pedagogies in her teaching of English and linguistics and collaborates with a team of educators in translanguaging and transknowledging pedagogies at a number of Australian and international universities, including the University of South Australia (UniSA). Together with a UniSA team, she collaborates with the Department for Education in South Australia in the development of a bilingual Chinese-English curriculum at Plympton International College.

Mr Andrew Scrimgeour

Mr. Andrew Scrimgeour is a lecturer in Languages Education & Chinese in the School of Education at the University of South Australia. He has undertaken extensive research in the Languages Education field, with a focus on literacy development in Chinese as a second language, curriculum design for Chinese language learning in schools, learner diversity in the Chinese languages classroom, and Chinese language teacher training. He co-authored Teaching Chinese as a Second Language: The Way of the Learner with Dr. Jane Orton published in Feb 2019. He has been Vice President of the national peak body of language educators, The Australian Federation of Modern Language Teachers Associations (AFMLTA), and is currently editor of Babel, the refereed journal of the AFMLTA, which is the only publication in Australia focusing on research into the teaching and learning of languages in Australian schools. He has been involved in several projects in developing curriculum for Chinese, including the development of the Australian Curriculum.

Ms Mei French

Dr. Mei French has worked as a leading EAL and Languages teacher in South Australian and interstate high schools. She has particular expertise in curriculum and pedagogies which build on students' multilingual repertoires. Through these pedagogies, students build strong connections to language learning and broader curriculum. Mei's work includes curriculum, assessment, resource development, bilingual programs and teacher development with a range of organisations. She has also worked in partnership with schools in Japan, Korea and Indonesia. Mei's PhD investigated the complex and purposeful multilingual practices, including translanguaging, of high school students and their teachers, and the implications for pedagogy and policy.

Ms Janet Armitage

Ms. Janet Armitage has international language teaching experience, having taught English as a Foreign Language in many contexts in France, and French at GCSE and A-Level in the UK and in secondary schools in Adelaide. Her experience also includes management of language teachers of French Sign Language (LSF). More recently, she has had several years of teaching experience working with Australian Aboriginal communities. Janet is currently Coordinator of English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EALD) and Languages at a large suburban secondary school in Adelaide. She is completing her PhD at the University of South Australia. Her focus is on investigating multilingual communications and diverse literacies in two remote Anangu communities. This research involves ethical understandings of community agency in oral and written literacies and the necessity for inclusion in educational sites of diverse ways of knowing, being and doing.

Ms Necia Stanford Billinghurst

Ms. Necia Stanford Billinghurst is a sociolinguist and an international education professional. She has two decades of experience managing education projects, teacher training, and providing technical expertise in language and education in Australia, Brazil, India, sub-Saharan Africa, and the USA. She has worked with partners such as DfE in Australia, and with the British Council, the Department for International Development (UK), the Japanese International Cooperation Agency, the International Labour Organization, UNICEF, and USAID internationally. She began her career as a teacher at one of the largest training centres in the USA, an institution which has provided instruction in 55 languages to more than half a million learners since 1978. She later became a lead researcher in the department that piloted language training innovations and monitored learning outcomes. Necia is currently an academic researcher and project manager at the University of South Australia and is pursuing a PhD in multilingualism among migrant communities in South Australia.

Professor Douglas Fisher

Douglas Fisher, PhD, is Professor of Educational Leadership at San Diego State University and a leader at Health Sciences High & Middle College in San Diego. He has served as a teacher, language development specialist, and administrator in public schools and non-profit organisations across the United States. Doug has engaged in Professional Learning Communities for several decades, building teams that design and implement systems to impact teaching and learning. He has published numerous professional development books for educators on a variety of topics ranging from literacy instruction to Visible Learning, Professional Learning Communities and more. Doug’s work has a solid foundation in research-based methods and is grounded in his own teaching and learning experiences, providing key strategies and implementation models to educators to achieve the highest impact on student achievement.
