Insurance and claims management

On this page

The department does not provide accidental injury insurance for children, students or visitors to departmental sites with the exception of insurance for volunteers and for students on approved work-experience placements off site. In addition the department may cover the cost of ambulance attendance for children/students participating in departmental activities and for volunteers undertaking volunteer duties and where the person does not have private ambulance cover.

Claims for expenses in relation to children, students or visitors to departmental sites may be met under the department’s public liability insurance if the injury or damage is attributable to negligence on the part of the department.

The department does not provide insurance for accidental damage to private property on departmental sites or in relation to departmental activities. Claims for loss or damage to private property may be met under the department’s public liability insurance if the loss or damage is attributable to negligence on the part of the department.

Ambulance claims

When determining to seek emergency assistance (ambulance) for children and students, staff should refer to managing health in education and care. Staff should not use a private vehicle to transport individuals unless on the advice of the ambulance service communication centre and an additional staff member should travel in the vehicle to supervise and assist the injured person.

Students and volunteers

Ambulance costs are primarily the responsibility of the individual or their caregiver. Those who are covered under private ambulance cover should contact their insurer to recover costs.

Where a student/child or volunteer does not have private cover, a request for payment by the department can be made online by completing the online ambulance claim form. Requests will be assessed by the Claims Manager to determine whether they meet the department’s criteria for payment to be made.

Visitors

Visitors to departmental sites are responsible for their own ambulance costs.
