Technical colleges for vocational training in high school

Five new technical colleges will be built across South Australia – 3 in metropolitan Adelaide and 2 in regional South Australia.

The technical colleges will support students in years 10 to 12 to complete their SACE while undertaking vocational education and training (VET) in specialist state-of-the-art facilities.

The first technical college will open in 2024, with the remaining 4 set to open by 2026.

Features of the technical colleges

The technical colleges will:

  • be run together with nearby high schools to support students to complete their SACE while getting VET qualifications
  • include brand new buildings built close to TAFE SA campuses and other key local training infrastructure
  • be tailored to the needs of the local industry, region and community
  • accept enrolments from public and private schools
  • be connected with the local industry to make sure there’s a pathway straight to work
  • support local businesses with school-based apprenticeships and traineeships
  • offer quality VET, working closely with TAFE SA and other not-for-profit training providers.

Locations for the technical colleges

The technical colleges will be located in:

  • Port Augusta – Port Augusta Secondary School or TAFE SA Port Augusta campus
  • Mount Gambier – TAFE SA Mount Gambier campus
  • North-east metro – The Heights School
  • Inner-west metro – Findon High School
  • Inner-south metro – TAFE SA Tonsley campus

Planning for the technical colleges

Detailed planning is currently underway to confirm the subject offering and operating model of each technical college. This will help make sure they meet the needs of students and industry.

Why we need these technical colleges

South Australia has a relatively high youth unemployment rate. At the same time, we’re experiencing a skills shortage with employers looking for workers.

The technical colleges will give students more choices and help them gain the knowledge and skills needed for in-demand industries in South Australia.
