We’re working with Telstra to connect 514 of the 518 public schools in SA to high-speed fibre optic cable throughout 2019 and 2020.
We’ll also provide high-speed internet for the remaining 4 public schools using other solutions – Kangaroo Island Community Education, Maree Aboriginal School, Oak Valley Aboriginal School and Leigh Creek Area School.
Every public school, teacher, and student will have access to high-speed, reliable internet, at the speed they need, when they need it – regardless of location. This is one of the biggest information technology projects we’ve ever taken on.
Fibre optic cable is the fastest internet connection type currently available. Currently only 1 in 5 public schools in SA have a fibre optic cable internet connection. We are changing this.
Starting January 2019, we’ll gradually start connecting schools to high-speed internet. The project is scheduled for completion by mid-2020.
We want to support our educators to deliver curriculum in modern ways. Reliable internet will help our staff to access the tools they need to deliver world-class education. Our goal is to prepare our students for jobs of the future.
We’re keen to see students improve academic outcomes by connecting, collaborating, creating, and accessing online resources more readily.
Other benefits include:
- the ability for all students to undertake subjects regardless of location – eg virtual excursions, long-distance learning
- greater collaboration between educators locally and globally
- attraction and retention of quality teachers in regional schools.
We’re working to find the right solution for preschools. We’re planning to begin work on some proofs of concept early in 2019.
