Disability access and inclusion for our education system

On this page

One in 6 Australians have disability. We’re committed to following national and state strategies and frameworks to make sure we are inclusive for all children and students with disability.

Department of Human Services (DHS) is the lead agency that make sure South Australian Government agencies are leading by example and working to improve access and inclusion for people with disability.

Australia’s Disability Strategy 2021 to 2031

Australia’s Disability Strategy 2021 to 2031 is our nations disability policy framework. Based on the strategy, all levels of government need to work together to create solutions to progress and enhance access and inclusion for the 1 in 6 Australians with disability.

The Australian Government Department of Social Services is driving the implementation of the strategy and managing the governance process on behalf of the Australian Government.

We're committed to progressing the strategy as it relates to our schools, preschools and education services.

Inclusive SA – state government

Inclusive SA, administered by DHS, is the states commitment to creating a more inclusive South Australia. It’s the states first disability inclusion plan, bringing together state government agencies and local councils to reduce the barriers faced by people living with disability.

In 2018, the Disability Inclusion Act 2018 (SA) was passed because our state recognised that a stronger commitment was needed. Using the Inclusive SA recommended actions, and the Disability Access and Inclusion Plans (DAIPs) together will enable state government agencies and local councils to develop and plan new strategies that address barriers and promote positive action.

The Inclusive SA actions for state government agencies and local councils will support the:

Inclusive SA also complements the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), as it aims to address access and inclusion for all South Australians living with disability. This includes people who are not NDIS participants.

Department disability access and inclusion plan

Our Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (PDF 301 KB) sets out the actions that we are committed to from 2020 to 2023 for our workforce and children and students with disability. In addition to these actions, we will continue to develop and implement reforms for children and students with disability.
