The Department for Education has well-practiced disaster and emergency management protocols. There is a clear process for reporting and managing diseases at schools and preschools.
SA Health is notified every time someone in SA tests positive for COVID-19. If a staff member, student or child tests positive, SA Health will contact their school, preschool or children's centre.
They will confirm whether the person who tested positive has been at the site. If they have, the site will close for at least 24 hours. Parents and guardians will need to pick up their children immediately.
SA Health will also notify the Department for Education. However, principals and preschool directors should still immediately contact:
- their education director
- the department’s work health and safety team on 8226 2000.
This will allow us to provide support immediately.
Public health officials will directly contact anyone who has been in contact with the person who tested positive. They will also notify anyone who has been at the site and advise them about treatment and self-isolation.
The site will be thoroughly cleaned. It will only reopen when health experts say it is safe.
If a site closes, parents will be informed. The department will give site leaders advice on staffing arrangements.
