The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It is commissioned by the Education Council, a council of ministers from all states and territories that works to ensure high‐quality schooling and early childhood development experiences for all young Australians.
The NAPLAN tests, coordinated by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA), are administered simultaneously in all schools across Australia by the relevant state test administration authority. The Department for Education is the test administration authority for all schools in South Australia.
|NAPLAN online||14 to 24 May 2019*|
|NAPLAN paper||14 to 16 May 2019|
* NAPLAN online test window runs for 9 days. This allows schools flexibility in scheduling test sessions.
The move to NAPLAN online testing commenced in 2018.
This means NAPLAN is transitioning from paper-based tests to computer-based assessments. The aim is for schools to transition to online testing by 2020.
Online testing will provide better assessment, more precise results and faster turnaround of information, helping schools tailor teaching and learning to student needs.
As we plan the transition of all schools in South Australia to NAPLAN online, we are working closely with the Association of Independent Schools South Australia and Catholic Education South Australia.
ACARA produces information brochures about paper-based and online testing for parents and carers.
Schools are responsible for distributing individual student reports to parents and carers.
The NAPLAN information brochure NAPLAN individual student reports (PDF 270KB) provides information for parents and carers on how to read and understand individual student reports.
Additional information for parents and carers can be found on the National Assessment Program website on the parent/carer support page.
Reports will be sent to school principals from mid-September.
The department has produced interpreting 2018 NAPLAN results (PDF 265KB) to support schools. Further resources to help schools interpret results are included in each school’s reporting pack, including the 2018 NAPLAN writing marking guide (PDF 17.7MB).
Principals have received login details for the test book archive website. This website enables schools to view the test books of any student who sat a NAPLAN paper test in 2018, and the writing script(s)/responses(s) of any student who sat the NAPLAN writing test online.
