The Workabout Centre for Aboriginal students

The Workabout Centre offers a range of programs and services to support Aboriginal students to make a successful transition from school to work, higher education or further training.

Student-centred learning empowers students to make positive choices, set high expectations and plan achievable training and employment goals. Each student’s individual training plan will focus on how they will ‘play the job game’, access training and ultimately achieve their goals.

Activities, training and qualifications supported by the Workabout Centre include:

  • Certificate I, II and III qualifications
  • Introduction programs to vocational education and training (VET) qualifications
  • First aid certificate
  • White card
  • Driver education learner’s permit
  • Barista training
  • Hair and beauty training
  • Career and industry immersion programs
  • Workplace learning and work experience
  • Year 12 transition and mentor support after school.

Eligibility

Workabout Centre programs and services are available to all Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander studentsand enrolled in a South Australian public high school.

Individual student needs are addressed on a case-by-case basis and tailored support provided.

Minimum ages may apply to some programs.

Our objectives

  • We are here to help Aboriginal young people get the best out of their education and employment opportunities while at high school.
  • We help Aboriginal young people find school-based employment and stay at school to complete their year 12 and South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE).
  • We help Aboriginal young people understand and learn the skills they need to find and keep a job after they finish school.
  • We help Aboriginal young people discover career options and information so they can successfully enter the workforce in the next 3 to 4 years after school.
