Amy Levai Aboriginal teaching scholarships

The department is committed to increasing the number of Aboriginal teachers in public education in South Australia.

Amy Levai Aboriginal teaching scholarships provide financial support for Aboriginal people interested in teaching.

Scholarships available:

  • $5000 Amy Levai Aboriginal teaching scholarship – secondary
  • $20,000 Amy Levai Aboriginal teaching scholarship – pre-service.

$5000 Amy Levai Aboriginal teaching scholarship – secondary

This scholarship supports Aboriginal senior secondary school students in SA government schools interested in a teaching career in public education.

Eligibility

Candidates must:

  • be senior secondary school students (year 11 or 12) studying in a South Australian government school
  • intend to enrol, as their first preference, in an initial teacher education program at an Australian university on completion of their final year of secondary education.

Scholarship conditions and payments

A total scholarship amount of $5000 will be paid – $2500 while at secondary school and $2500 on confirmation of acceptance into an Initial Teacher Education program the following year.

Monies received from scholarship payments can be used at the student’s discretion. Payments may be subject to tax and it is the student’s responsibility to seek independent and personal tax advice.

Feedback will be sought from scholarship recipients about how the scholarship has supported their studies.

Scholarship conditions include entering into a contractual agreement with the department.

Scholarships are subject to available funds.

$20,000 Amy Levai Aboriginal teaching scholarship – pre-service

This scholarship supports Aboriginal pre-service teacher education students to complete a teaching qualification and gain employment as a teacher in public education.

Eligibility

Candidates must:

  • be actively enrolled in a teacher education program at any Australian tertiary institution
  • be a resident of South Australia.

Scholarship conditions and payments

Scholarship payments are made per semester, based on the submission of successful results, paid into a nominated bank account and can be used at the discretion of the recipient. Payments may be subject to tax. It is the responsibility of recipients to seek independent and personal tax advice.

Verification of Aboriginality
