Funding to support parent engagement to make schools safer

25 January 2024

The latest round of successful applicants for Parents in Education funding have been announced for the 2024 school year.

More than $84,000 will be shared across 24 South Australian government schools and preschools to engage parents in their child’s learning.

Projects with a focus on violence prevention through strengthening family, community and school partnerships were given priority in this latest round, as an immediate action from the Minister’s Roundtable on violence prevention in schools.

Amongst this year’s successful applicants is Brahma Lodge Primary School who will hold a series of workshops at the school, to be led by their Aboriginal families, to create a secure and inclusive outdoor learning space that will be accessible to all students.

In 2024, parents from 5 main cultural groups at Parafield Gardens High School will organise and participate in forums that will be used to inform the development of the school’s racism policy.

In regional SA, Solomontown Kindergarten plan to bring families together from local preschools, playgroups and the library to run parenting programs addressing wellbeing and safety concerns.

Department for Education Acting Executive Director, Support and Inclusion Darren Humphrys said the Parents in Education funding assists government school and preschool communities to boost parent engagement with a little innovation and creativity.

“Empowering parents and carers to get involved in their local school or preschool community creates plenty of positive outcomes for student learning,” he said.

“This funding also helps to build parent knowledge and skills so they can better support their child’s learning and wellbeing at home.”

Up to $5,000 of funding is available for each parent engagement project that helps parents and carers to get involved in their child’s education and support learning at home through positive relationships with schools.

The full list of successful applicants in the 2024 Parents in Education funding, including 21 schools and 3 preschools, is available on the Department for Education website.
