Using words to grow young minds

Words Grow Minds is a new campaign, launched this week, which aims to show families how they can support the development of their children in the first 3 years.

The initiative is the first to be released by the Early Years Taskforce, which includes South Australian government and non-government services from the education and early childhood sector who work directly with young children and their families.

The taskforce recognises that while all parents and carers want the best for their children, sometimes it’s hard to know what they can do to help.

Through the use of song, bright visuals and simple messages, Words Grow Minds gets straight to the heart of how parents and carers can help babies and young children thrive. It’s as simple as talking, reading, playing and singing together from birth.

Families can access resources and tips on the Words Grow Minds website that help support their child’s growth through their time, attention and imagination.

According to data from the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC), nearly a quarter of South Australian children are starting school developmentally vulnerable.

Words Grow Minds is a great start to build deeper community awareness around the critical importance and lifelong impact of quality interactions with children in the early formative years.

The Early Years Taskforce is funded by the South Australian Department for Education.
