Yorke Peninsula students gaining pathways to resources sector

23 May 2023

Students from the Yorke Peninsula will be a step closer to a future career in the resources sector thanks to a partnership with Rex Minerals.

The Department for Education and Rex Minerals will begin a new partnership to develop a long-term plan assisting students from across the Yorke Peninsula to enter the resource sector.

Rex Minerals Chief Operating Officer Jason Schell, said the discussions with the State Government had a strong workforce focus on their Hillside Project, a copper and gold mine for south of Ardrossan.

“The school’s Resources Sector Industry Immersion Day will be available to all students in the region interested in learning more about the fantastic career opportunities at Rex and in the broader resource sector. Rex will be showcasing mining equipment on the day to the students.”

“When the Hillside Project is operational, Rex will also provide training program graduates the opportunity to enter their workforce through school-based apprenticeships.”

The career pathways program focuses on opportunities for students and school leavers, while also leaning into the close industry links of the area.

Students from schools across the region will have the opportunity to pursue a structured pathway into the sector, creating a pipeline from education into a career.

The resources pathway program will be hosted by Ardrossan Area School from next year with students invited to attend a career awareness day in June to learn more.

“I am really excited by this work and what it will mean not just for our students, but for all students in our Yorke Peninsula schools in coming years," said Ardrossan Area School Principal Margaret Roads.

“We are building relationships with key stakeholders that will see local students have a greater opportunity to work and live in this area for generations to come.

“Our Resource Sector Industry Immersion Day will provide students with access to equipment used in the resource sector, information sessions on the project and upcoming career opportunities.”

The program will incorporate vocational training, a customised curriculum and industry activities with REX supporting students as part of the learning program through its Hillside Project – a copper and gold mine.

The Ardrossan Area School are hosting the Resources Sector Industry Immersion Day on June 23.
