There’s lots of great work happening across our education system, and we’re seeing improvements in learning outcomes for Aboriginal children and young people.

At the same time, the department identified a need to reset the approach to improving education outcomes for Aboriginal learners, in partnership with Aboriginal people. We’re not currently achieving at the level of our ambitions in Closing the Gap or in the Aboriginal Education Strategy. Aboriginal people tell us more effort is needed.

The Blueprint was created with Aboriginal voices at its centre, because strong outcomes for Aboriginal children and young people must be shaped by the people and communities they belong to.

The work was co-sponsored by Professor Peter Buckskin and our Chief Executive, Professor Martin Westwell. Decision making was shared by 2 groups, one comprising Aboriginal staff from across the education system who brought lived experience, cultural knowledge and community perspectives to the work, and the other comprising of senior leaders from the department and SAAETCC.

Who should use the Blueprint

Education staff in every role are encouraged to use the Blueprint alongside Our Strategy for Public Education and Areas of Impact to guide their everyday practice.

The Blueprint for Aboriginal outcomes builds on the good work already happening in our system. It supports all education staff to strengthen practices as the basis for improving outcomes for Aboriginal learners across all Areas of Impact in Our Strategy for Public Education.

It’s business as usual for all strategies and programs, including the Aboriginal Education Strategy (AES) and the Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). These are existing and important commitments for the department, and the Blueprint does not replace them.

The Blueprint has been designed to unify, strengthen and accelerate progress against our existing commitments.
