Professional learning for secondary teachers in public education
Teacher specialisation will ensure each public high school and birth to year 12 school across South Australia has the skills and capacity to deliver civics and citizenship education.
Safeguarding Democracy through Public Education professional learning supports public schools with high students to strengthen civics, citizenship and democratic capability through existing curriculum. Two professional learning programs will be offered:
- one supporting specialist civics and citizenship expertise in Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS), and
- one strengthening democratic education, skills and themes across all other learning areas.
Programs offered
Year 7 to 8 HASS: Safeguarding Democracy through Public Education
The Year 7 to 8 HASS program supports teachers to develop specialist expertise in civics and citizenship, and lead capability across their school.
Participants will be supported in strengthening their conceptual knowledge and pedagogic approach to the HASS: civics and citizenship curriculum in year 7 and 8. This program focuses on designing learning experiences that empower students as active, informed and ethical citizens.
Feedback from teachers participating in the year 7 to 8 HASS specialist program
Year 9 to 10: Safeguarding Democracy through Public Education
The year 9 to 10 professional learning program is for teachers across all non-HASS learning areas.
The program supports teachers to make democratic themes already embedded in their subject more visible, explicit and transferable for students. It focuses on designing learning experiences that empower students as engaged citizens. It does this without adding new content or teaching civics as a subject.
