Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum information for parents and carers

On this page

The Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum (KS:CPC) is a child safety and respectful relationships curriculum for children and young people from birth to year 12. It supports children and young people in age and developmentally appropriate ways to :

  • understand they have the right to be safe
  • recognise abuse and unsafe situations
  • apply knowledge, skills and understanding to be safe
  • seek support for themselves and others.

It is a requirement that all children and young people in Department for Education preschools and schools access the KS:CPC every year, taught by educators who are trained in its use. The KS:CPC is also used by a range of South Australian, Australian and international schools and preschools.

The KS:CPC has gained a world leading reputation due to its depth of content, breadth of learning, contemporary nature, and the requirement for teachers to complete training prior to implementing with children and young people.

Why we teach children about keeping safe

All children have the fundamental right to be safe – to learn, play, grow, live safely and be supported and valued, in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989).

Education is paramount in protecting the rights of all children and young people and empowers them to advocate for their safety and the safety of others.

Curriculum

Through the KS:CPC, children and young people gain knowledge, skills and understanding in age and developmentally appropriate ways.

The KS:CPC themes focus on the curriculum’s core principles and key understandings:

  • Theme 1: We all have the right to be safe
  • Theme 2: We can help ourselves to be safe by talking to people we trust.

The KS:CPC content is presented sequentially across 4 focus areas:

  • the right to be safe
  • relationships
  • recognising and reporting abuse
  • protective strategies.
