Athletics (track and field) secondary championships

On this page

The track and field secondary championships are for schools who nominate teams. Find out more about the event and how to participate.

Who can participate

To participate in the event

  • schools must be affiliated with School Sport SA.
  • athletes must be in years 7 to 12.

To participate as a student with disability as above plus, athletes should hold a classification.

Athlete age is calculated as of 31 December in the year of the event. For example, a student turning

  • 13 years old in 2024 competes in the 13 year old events
  • 17 years old in 2024 competes in the open age events

Athletes can compete in a higher age group.

12 year old athletes in year 7

Students in year 7 and turning 12 in 2024 who wish to be considered for the state team can nominate as an individual competitor to compete in the primary track and field championship. The date to compete will be determined based on nominations.

Students are also eligible to compete for their school team if the school enters the secondary track and field championships in the 13 years and under age group. These results will not be used to select the 12 years and under state team due to the considerable time difference between the primary and secondary events.

Multiclass students with disability event specifications

An individual program will be developed and emailed to schools and students once all multiclass students with disability nominations have been received.

Students nominate for a maximum of 4 of the following events

  • 100m
  • 200m
  • 400m
  • 800m
  • 1500m
  • Discus
  • High jump
  • Javelin
  • Long jump
  • Shot put

Weights for the discus and shot put will be based on the students age and classification.

Students must have prior experience in high jump and javelin to participate in these events. The must be verified by the nominating teacher.

What is classification for students with disability

Classification exists in sport to support as fair competition as possible amongst athletes with different disabilities.

By grouping athletes with similar levels of functional ability into classes for competition, the outcomes of the competition become based on performance rather than on differences in their disabilities.

Students who do not fit into one of these categories may not be able to be classified.

  • Physical or functional
  • Vision impairment
  • Intellectual
  • Deaf
  • Transplant

Classification is coordinated by Athletics SA and must be organised 60 days prior to competing. See classification by Athletics SA for further details and how get classified.

Rules and conditions of the track and field secondary championship

Competitor number of events and age calculation

Number of events

Each school can enter 1 competitor per event, and 1 relay team for each age group. Provided that the students qualifies by age, they can compete in the following number of events with a relay counting as 1 of their events. Schools with a secondary enrolment

  • greater than 360 - any 4 events
  • of 240 to 360 students - any 5 events
  • less than 240 students - any 6 events

Single gender schools double their enrolments for these calculations.

Country schools more than 200km from the CBD can have 1 more event than allowable based on the above calculations.

Age calculation

Ages are calculated as of 31 December in the year of the event. For example, a student turning

  • 13 years old in 2024 competes in the 13 year old events
  • 17 years old in 2024 competed in the open age events.

Athletes can compete in a higher age group.

Points

Points are awarded for all events as

  • 1st place - 10 points
  • 2nd place - 8 points
  • 3rd place - 7 points
  • 4th place - 6 points
  • 5th place - 5 points
  • 6th place - 4 points
  • 7th place - 3 points
  • 8th to 9th place - 1 point

Dress for competitors

Each competitor must wear and athletic uniform approved by the school. This may include pants provided they are in accordance with the school's approved uniform.

Each school has been allocated a number as shown on the gradings list. Each competitor must wear this number securely fastened on the front and back of their singlet. The number must be at least 10cm high and clearly visible at all times.

Students competing in any track and field event must wear shoes. Students will not be allowed to participate in any event until they comply with this rule.

No competitor will be permitted to wear spokes which are longer than 6mm, measured from the sole of the shoe.

Starting order

  • In sprint events, competitors will run in the lanes they are allocated.
  • In multiple lap running events, competitors will start on the line as allocated. Division 2 may need to start in a line behind division 1.
  • Division 1 will always precede division 2 except in combined events where they start together.

Arena

  • Only officials and competitors who are actively competing will be allowed on the arena.
  • Competitors must not enter or leave the arena between the start and finish of the 100m on the West Track.
  • Coaching from inside the arena will result in disqualification of the individual or team involved.
  • On finishing a track event or events for 800m and above competitors receive their place card, then report to the track recording table. For events 400m and less move out of the arena and results will be posted.

Throwing implements

All throwing implements will be supplied.

No individual impalements are allowed to be used.

Clash of events

Competitors in field events where another event clashes must inform the official in charge of the field event when leaving and returning.

They are to negotiate with the official before the event begins and may have one attempt out of order and on returning before the event is concluded and have the rest of the attempts in round 3.

In high jump, the bar may be higher, and athletes may not join in at any height out of turn unless the event is still on first attempts at that height. After this they may rejoin the event at the next height.

Pole vault

Pole vault is in A grade only.

For pole vaulters in A grade, it is the same as any other individual event, it just takes more time to compete. Inexperienced vaulters need to attend the training session that operates before the event starting at 9.30am so they can shown they are capable and allowed to compete.

Pole vaulters whose school is competing in a lower grade may compete at the A grade championships as individuals. They are eligible to break records and archive standards. They will be competing for place certificates in an A to F grade competition that has no point allocation.

Competitors do not need to supply their own poles.

Crouch and false starts

Crouch starts are compulsory for all track events run in lanes. These events are

  • 100m
  • 200m
  • 400m
  • Hurdles
  • First relay leg

False starts

1 false start is permitted for all track events.

If a second false start occurs, whoever false started that time (irrespective of who false started the first time) will be disqualified.

Relays

When a relay baton is dropped it must be picked up by the person who dropped it even if the baton is outside the lane. The runner must re-join the race at the point where they left their lane and must not interfere with any other runner in the process.

Track and field resources for secondary schools

Resources will be updated for the 2024 event as soon as possible.
