The cycling championships are for schools who nominate individual competitors from students in years 7 to 12 in 2024. Find out more about the event and how to participate.

• Schools must be affiliated with School Sport SA.
• competitors must be in years 7 to 12.

Event format

• Registrations will be open from 9:00am to 9:30am
• Racing to commence at approximately 10:00am
• Time trial
• Recess break with students being separated into grades
• Points race
• Criterium race
• Event finish time approximately 2:30pm

Entry fee

• $16.50 including GST per student.

No payment is required on the day. A tax invoice will be sent to schools after the event.

How to enter

Schools staff submit the cycling championship nomination form by Tuesday 6 February. 

The nomination form asks if students have an AusCycling licence and what grade they compete in at AusCycling events? Please have this available when nominating (if applicable).

Schools must ensure that students:

• acknowledge and accept the risk involved in participating in a cycling event
• have a bike that is properly maintained and suitable for the event
• have a appropriate level of fitness to participate.
• appropriate caregiver consent is obtained and all consent forms and medical details are brought to the event in case an accident or medical incident occurs.

Events

Time Trial - individual cyclists starting at 30 seconds or 1 minute intervals trying to see the fastest over 3 laps of the course (3-8km). Dependent on the availability and subsequent length of the track.

Points Race - cyclists ride together, in their grade with a sprint finish every 2 laps. Race points will be scored 5, 3, 2, 1 for first four riders past the finish line on every second lap. Grades will ride for around 10-30 minutes.

Criterium - cyclists ride in grades for a certain time over a circuit. Grades will ride for around 15 to 30 minutes plus two laps.

Scoring

Championship points will be awarded as 12, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 for each event, with the highest score at the completion of the 3 events being judged the winner of the grade.

• Victoria Park has cafes in the grandstand and old stables.
• There are public toilets under the grandstand.
• Spectators are asked to stand off the track and well clear of the finish line and to prevent issues with judging and safety.

Parking

• Parking is available on Fullarton Road and Wakefield Road.
• Bike trailers may be left in a designated area near the track, please contact School Sport SA to arrange this. No other vehicles are to enter OR remain on the parklands.

Teacher and parent marshals

Teachers and parent are asked to provide marshalling duties on the corners. Please indicate on the nomination form if you have a staff member or parent willing to marshal on the day.

Presentations and results

• Presentations will be at the end of the event.
• Results will be posted on this page of the website as soon as possible after the event.

Grading

The cycling championships begins with a Time Trial.

As part of the nomination process riders will nominate a grade. This will be used a guide to support grading decisions made by cycling officials.

Following the Time Trial the competitors will be graded (A, B, C, D) for the following races.

Grades may incorporate all age groups, therefore competitors will ride against others in that grade regardless of age.

Less experienced cyclists are encouraged to enter and will likely be placed in lower grades.

Students wanting to change grades out of the grade they have been allocated may do so but will become an unofficial competitor and ineligible for scoring.

Equipment restrictions for all riders

• Only Australian Standard road helmets (AS2063) are permitted.
• Carbon Wheels are now permitted by AusCycling.
• High pressure detachable tyre and tubes (Clinchers) or tubeless tyres shall be used.
• For all races riders must have a standard road bike, with "classic" style handlebars.
• For the Time Trial, riders can add bolt-on handlebar extensions (usually called time trial or "aero" bars). These extensions must not project further than 75cm forward of the centre of the bottom bracket of the bike. Elbow supports are permitted. Time Trial bars must be mounted in a horizontal plane. All Time Trial bars must be removed for the criterium and points race. No specific Time Trial bikes permitted.

Reasons behind this include;

• The championship being a one off event with no further selection or progression
• All age groups being open. Grading enables the differentiation of ability
• The event having no links to other AusCycling associated races
