The department provides opportunities to start a career in a variety of non-teaching roles through traineeships.

Traineeships

Traineeships provide structured learning and paid employment to achieve a nationally recognised qualification at the certificate III level or above. You can complete a traineeship in 1 to 2 years.

Traineeship positions may be full time or part time. Trainees are paid in accordance with the relevant industrial award or enterprise agreement based on the type of role they undertake.

Trainee development

Trainees build their skills, knowledge and capabilities through both on-job training and off-job training.

In the workplace, trainees are supervised and mentored by experienced employees while undertaking tasks relevant to the qualification and their training plan.

Off-job training is delivered by a Nominated Training Organisation (NTO) detailed in the training contract.  Off-job training is an essential requirement of the traineeship, so the trainee achieves the relevant qualification.

Roles available

Traineeships are offered across the department in schools, preschools and corporate office in a range of vocations, such as:

• information technology
• office administration
• sport and recreation
• horticulture (grounds person)
• early childhood education and care
• education support
• school laboratory operations.

Eligibility

Eligible candidates for a traineeship are:

• aged 17 and older
• a South Australia resident
• an Australian citizen, permanent resident or have an appropriate work visa.

If the trainee holds an appropriate work visa, the expiry date must be after the training contract end date.

Previous employees who have recently accepted a Targeted Voluntary Separation Package are not eligible to apply.

Eligible applicants must:

• undertake Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect – Education and Care (RRHAN-EC) child protection training
• gain a Department of Human Services (DHS) Working with Children Check (WWCC) prior to being employed
• complete a relevant vocational education & training (VET) qualification with a Nominated Training Organisation (NTO) by the end date of the traineeship
• participate in professional development activities
• adhere to the Code of Ethics for the South Australian Public Sector.
