When to change an approved council constitution

A site's approved constitution does not usually need to change, even if it’s a few years old. There are two exceptions to this – when:

  • a site’s name changes
  • the membership structure of the council needs to change.

Reasons to change a council’s membership

A change to the membership structure might need to happen if:

  • you consistently find you don’t have enough council members
  • the number of students at the site changes
  • the needs of the site change and you have different committees to work with.

Changing from a school council to governing council

This is not just a change to the approved school council constitution – it needs an entirely new constitution (and approval) based on the Governing Council Model Constitution (Word 141KB).

Please contact us if your council is thinking about changing from a school council to a governing council.
